Cycling Day 19 Rain Rain go away

Mont St Michelle – Cancale 28 miles plus 4.

It has been raining all night and the weather forecast says dry by 10:00. This forecast kept changing so by 10:00 we decide to tog up and set off. The rain was heavy and unrelenting but, believe it or not, it is not unpleasant with the right clothes on, albeit ours are not colour coordinated or stylish. 🤣🤣

The route follows the coast on cycle ways and we are able to look back at more beautiful views of Mont Saint Michelle. The route is fairly easy today and we pass a number of horse and carriages using the cycleways. One foolishly asks my compatriot the way. I wonder where they are now?

As the track reaches the sea our route takes us along side a huge bay. The coast is lined with the remains of windmills, the majority of which have been converted into houses but one has been restored as a museum. We pass through various coastal villages and stop in Cherruex for coffee and tea.

The rain stops at about 11:30 and we cycle on to dry our wet weather gear. At exactly 12:00 we approach a fishing port, Le Vivier sur Mer, with a restaurant about to open and several locals waiting to get in. As the majority of the tables were reserved, we are very lucky to get a table; looking and smelling as we do (Susan adds – this does not apply to me as I smell delightful and look gorgeous) ( Ed adds this is a matter of opinion) but we do agree we have an excellent meal.

I am allowed to eat lunch this time because it is Saturday, and there is no restaurant in the Manoir where we are staying tonight, so this evening we will be having a picnic meal. In the restaurant we sit between two French couples. One couple speaks good English and recommends Cancale, as a good place to visit which we do. However they did not mention it has steep hills. The other couple who had tried communicating by sign language waved us off. Was it a French conspiracy?

Cancale is a lovely seaside resort with a long harbour wall, light house, and countless restaurants and bars. We stop for a drink and then set off to the ‘centre ville’ which happens to be at the top of another hill.

We find a supermarket to buy our picnic ensuring we have cidre for an aperitif and wine to accompany the meal. (Meal being my compatriots exaggeration of the eclectic mix of items constituting her picnic).

The Manoir where we stay tonight is tucked away on the outskirts of Cancale and it is located in grounds, with a pool and Jacuzzi. Unfortunately it starts to rain again and so we do opt to leave our swim wear in the bottom of the panniers (I did not waste pannier space on swimming trunks I would have used the opportunity to wash my cycling shorts).

Tomorrow we only have about 15 miles to St Malo and the end of the trip. My unreliable weather forecast says it should be dry.
