Morton to Hunmanby and another sunny morning.
Practice makes perfect. Another breakfast, the depositing of bags and the collection of bikes went like clockwork. To make a change we started with a down hill ride through Morton. The down was shortlived as we turned out of town and were launched into a series of uphill stretches.
Fortunately my compatriot did not register the implications of this sign until we started climbing this ‘cheeky hill’ (as described in the trip notes) which went on for over a mile and saw us both walking and resting enroute.
The route was great if you ignored the 700 metre climb. Lovely views of the arable farmland and countryside. Just to give some balance there were some great down hill stretches even if they were only 11%.
The only consistent thing on the trip today, other than hills, were the closed pubs. We cycled 34 miles without an open cafe or pub. We met a local couple, also cycling, outside a closed pub and exchanged notes. It turns out they lived in the road where our hotel is situated and recommended local eateries. Things might be looking up.
Things didn’t improve when we booked into the 4* hotel, in Humby. We were told there was no space in the restaurant, so we tried all the recommended, and not recommended, local pubs and restaurants. We were unlucky, and found that they were all closed or fully booked blaming Covid and Brexit. This left the following choices: sandwiches from the Coop, takeaway Chinese, or fish and chips. We opted for the fish and chips and we sat in the hotel garden to eat them. We then walked back down the road to the only welcoming pub in the town.
Our virtual world trip experiance has definitely, and embarrassingly, been British today.
